How to Get Abs
Have you noticed all the hype about how to get abs?
Just this week I read an article by a guy who made the following claim about how to get abs: Working out just two weeks using just two simple exercises can get you and me stunning abdominals. His approach, which I like to call the "two in two" method, was the very technique he used to get his finely toned six pack.
But here's the deal.
How to Get Abs - Your Mileage May Vary
Even if this guy was able to get great abs in only two weeks -- and I actually think he was probably telling the truth -- his "two in two" method just won't work for most people.
The problem is that everyone has a different starting point.
It's like we're all lined up to run a hundred yard dash.
Some people, like the writer of that article, start just 10 or 20 yards from the finish line. Others of us start back 50 or 60 yards. Still others start 100 (or maybe more) yards back.
Obviously, if you're only 10 yards away, it doesn't take much effort to get to the finish line.
Yards Represent Fat -- The Big Challenge
How far you start from the finish line is determined by how much body fat you carry. As one author put it, your primary abs building workout starts in the kitchen.
You can do all of the abs exercises you want, but if your body fat level is too high, the peaks of your finely honed six pack will remain hidden under a layer of flab. It's like a layer of clouds covering the chiseled tops of a mountain range.
And unfortunately there's no such thing as exercising just one part of your body to melt the fat away from that single area. You've got to reduce your total body fat content.
Can I Get a Second Opinion? -- A Word from the Experts
According to Mike Geary, certified personal trainer and author of The Truth about Six Pack Abs, "Men need to get below 10-11% body fat to really see the abs (they really pop out at 7-8%) and women need to get below 16-19% to really bring out their abs."
Strength coach and personal trainer David Grisaffi says in his book Firm and Flatten Your Abs, "If you want to see the core region and the six pack, the fat has to go. This is done through diet."
So if you happen to have a body with a really low percentage of body fat, like the author of the "two in two" method, you have a pretty easy "walk" to the finish line.
The rest of us? Well... we've got to be far more realistic. How to get abs is largely about how to lose fat. Losing body fat takes time. And it takes the right technique, especially to lose the last little bit that will reveal your signature six-pack showcase.
As Geary says, "The reason so few people have a nice set of abs is that it doesn't happen overnight and it's not easy to stay lean in today's culture."
So as enticing as a "two in two" approach sounds for how to get abs, most of us need a little more help. We need a comprehensive, systematic approach, one that takes into account our unique situation. A step-by-step program that shows you how to melt the fat and build the abdominals is the only sound approach to develop your great abs.
